Insolation is the amount of solar radiation energy incident on a plane surface, here a solar panel. There are two kinds of insolation –
- Direct insolation is the direct solar radiation incident on the solar panel from the sun.
- Diffuse insolation is the indirect solar radiation incident on the solar panel from scattering – clouds, fog, dust, haze or other atmospheric condition.
Modern solar panels are designed to work using diffuse as well as direct insolation making them better generators in overall.
