Band Gap

by Solus Energy

For semiconductors the band gap is the energy difference between the highest valence band and the lowest conduction band. The basis of generating electricity in solar cells is when a photon of light gives up it’s energy to an electron to enable the electron to cross the band gap into the conduction band allow the energy to flow around the electrical circuit.  The energy required to do this is know as the Band Gap Energy.
