Self discharge is the rate at which a battery loses its stored energy when the electrodes are not connected to an external circuit caused by internal reactions within a battery cell. The rate of self discharge varies by battery design and their chemistry from fractions of 1% per month to several percent a month. This only applies if the battery is not being used so in normal daily use as found in a solar energy system is not a factor.
